Video of Falcon booster reentry

From CRS-4 over Brazil: Sounds like a party in Brazil. Then again, it probably always sounds like a party in Brazil. Go over to NASASpaceFlight.com’s forum for more pictures.

Several astronaut firsts and records to be set in 2015

Mostly longevity-type records. To wit: First time an American will be sent to orbit for over 300 days (and the 4th time so for a Russian Scott Kelly will become the most experienced US astronaut of all time on October 4th. On 28 October, Scott Kelly will also break the US record for longest continuous …

MESSENGER on fumes

Literally…er…Figuratively. Whatever. It’s almost completely out of propellant, but they’re going to use the Helium left in the tanks to provide a few more orbit corrections, extending the life of the mission another 3 or 4 weeks. “To my knowledge this is the first time that helium pressurant has been intentionally used as a cold-gas …

Let’s party like it’s….2009?

Human Exploration Transfer Stage (HETS) was first proposed in 2009. I’m not exactly sure why the staff writers at SpaceDaily.com chose to dredge up this idea, but since I have to blog about something today, I’ll bite. In principle, using the ISS as a manufacture and test facility for human-crewed, deep-space missions makes perfect sense…if …

Wuh-waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

Russia to Debate US Discrimination of Glonass System in UN: Reports. Boy, an article that combines Russian whining with the supposed effectiveness (ed.note: don’t forget impartiality!!) of the UN! It’s like Christmas all over again for me. Here’s an idea for my Russian comrades: come up with an idea better than a not-quite-as-good knock off …

DAWN reappears from far side of Sun to begin approach to Ceres

Will enter Ceres orbit in March. If DAWN is the first mission that is able to enter orbit over two different targets, does that mean that once its done all it can around Ceres, that they’ll pick another target?

CCtCAP status going into 2015

AmericaSpace.com has a pretty good interview article with Phil McAlister, NASA’s CCtCAP program manager. Highlights: There will be a long-term services contract for ISS resupply after CCtCAP. That’s one of the reasons that CCtCAP’s service flights vary from 2 to 6 — they may award the long-term contract before the end of CCtCAP and cut …

SpaceX inks deal to launch Qatar satellite in 2016

Good to see SpaceX landing civilian work. Per Gunter’s Space Page, Es’hail 2 is a planned communication satellite operated by Es’hailSat, the Qatar Satellite Company. It will also feature an radio amateur payload. The new satellite will be positioned at the 26° East hotspot position for TV broadcasting and significantly adds to the company’s ability …

Drop in cosmic radiation reported

Via SpaceWeather.com. Every day, Earth is bombarded by galactic cosmic rays–subatomic particles accelerated to high energies by distant supernovas, stellar flares, and other explosions. On Dec. 21st, ground-based neutron monitors detected a sudden decrease in this cosmic radiation. What happened? Over a 48-hour period beginning on Dec. 21st, a series of three CMEs swept past …

Does Ceres harbor subterranean life?

We’ll find out when DAWN gets there in this Spring. It’s postulated that Ceres is made largely of frozen water since its density is so low. Early this year, NASA announced the detection of water vapor off Ceres, which may be the result of water plumes caused by the heating of the Sun. Where there’s …

Mars has macroweather, and it is different from Earth’s

Martian macroweather changes every 1.8 sols, where Earth’s lasts about a week and a half. This is why weather.com has 10 day forecasts, but not 20 day forecasts. Ya learn something new every day… This will have interesting implications for Martian colonists, as they’ll only be able to predict weather a couple of days in …

An examination of the Star of Bethlehem

Source here: Hobbyspace.com The thing that makes me think it wasn’t an astronomical event at all is this passage from Matthew 2:7-10: 7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As …

Christmas Barnyard Bliss

I wrote this a few years ago (eight, to be exact). It’s not space-related, but it is Christmas-related.  I was inspired by the old folk tales my dad told me, which were told to him by his Uncle John, who no doubt heard them from his dad or uncle from Nova Scotia. Hope you enjoy …

Yowza — looks like we just missed a CME event

I saw via SpaceWeather.com that an X-class eruption occured back on the 20th. The X-rays were directed right at Earth and it disrupted HF comms for hours in the southern hemisphere. The resulting CME, though, was directed much further south and if it hit Earth, it would only be a slight glancing blow. According to …
