US Defense Bill would prohibit purchase of Russian rocket engines

I think it’s safe to say that we’re in a second Cold War with the Ruskies, and we’ll win this one easier than the first one. With oil prices plummeting, and the US space industry weaning itself off the Russian rocket teat, the Russian economy which is already rickety, is going to fall apart within the next 5 years or so.

According to the article, we’ve got 16 RD-180 rockets remaining in the inventory, which means we’ll need a replacement by the end of 2016. Assuming the Bill passes, of course — IMO it has *major* issues, and may not make it to the President’s desk. However, I suspect whichever Defense Bill makes it through Congress, it will contain the same prohibition against using Russian rocket engines.
