This is neither new, nor viable for human trips to Mars

New idea for transporting spacecraft could ease trip to Mars. Ballistic Capture basically has a spacecraft fly out ahead of its target planet but at a slower speed. When the target planet comes by, its gravity captures the spacecraft and puts it into a natural orbit.

As the article itself points out, this technique has been used for orbiters a couple of times in the past. It’s “new”only in regards to the fact that it hasn’t been used for Martian orbiters yet.

While Ballistic Capture has its merits (particularly that it requires less fuel than a Hohmann transfer orbit), the longer time in transit for human passengers makes this idea a non-starter, in my opinion.
