3rd time the charm? Liveblogging the SpaceX CRS-5 launch

Well, it looks like the CRS-5 launch was a success, but the booster recovery failed. I guess that means I’ll be live-blogging SpaceX’s CRS-6! Nap time for me until we go yard saling in about 4 1/2 hours. Thanks for hanging in there with me!

0221: NASA TV concludes its broadcast.
0216: Elon Musk tweets: “Didn’t get good landing/impact video. Pitch dark and foggy. Will piece it together from telemetry and … actual pieces.”
0211: Elon Musk tweets: “Ship itself is fine. Some of the support equipment on the deck will need to be replaced…”
0206: Elon Musk tweets: “Rocket made it to drone spaceport ship, but landed hard. Close, but no cigar this time. Bodes well for the future tho.” We’ll hang around a little bit longer to see if there’s any more news from the Drone Ship.

0200: Solar panels successfully deployed on Dragon.
0159: Sunrise just as the solar panels begin deployment. Fantastic video from Dragon! Woot woot!
0157: Dragon has separated — God speed! Next step: solar panel deployment.
0156: 2nd stage engine cut off. Standing by for 2nd stage separation.
0155: Lost signal on first stage.
0155: Big crowd of workers watching outside of SpaceX mission control. They look jazzed!
0154: Stage 1 re-entry engine startup.
0153: Power and telemetry nominal. 3 minutes until 2nd stage shut down.
0151: 139 km for Dragon. Everything is looking great.
0150: 58 km high and still rising. First stage separation confirmed. 2nd stage ignition confirmed.

Alrighty!!! Now what we’ve all been waiting for: recovery of the booster. Stay tuned!

0147: LAUNCH!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!!
0146: T-1 minute and counting. We’ve made further on this countdown than either attempt before.
0145: Tanks being pressurized. Range is “green”.
0144: Rocket armed for launch.
0143: Strongback retracted.
0140: Rocket has transferred to internal power.
0139: T-8 minutes and counting. My son made it safely to Baylor U. yesterday. If this morning’s launch occurs, he was clearly the bad-luck charm.
0137: T-10 minutes and counting. Here we go!
0134: All stations report ready for launch.
0130: NASA TV begins running their “Inside the ISS” feature, then apparently remembers that they’re broadcasting the SpaceX launch live, and quickly cut back to the video of the launch pad.
0128: Beginning final countdown launch preps. Last weather balloon is being launched now for a final check of the upper winds.
0123: Seeing some antenna anomalies on the range. They are working for on a plan to choose between backup and primary. At this point, it sounds like they’re confident they’ll still launch. Fingers crossed!

Hey, I didn’t realize Casey Kasem did voice overs for commercials! Is there nothing he didn’t do?

0121: Dragon on internal power. It’ll take 2 days to get to ISS and is carrying 5,108 pounds of supplies.
0117: T-30 minutes and counting.
0114: I just saw that Elon Musk tweeted that he’s in California for the launch. Haven’t seen him at SpaceX mission control yet. Hmmmmm….that makes me wonder: Hawthorne is only a couple of hours away from me. I wonder if SpaceX would have allowed me to blog from their HQ if I’d asked them? Hmmmmmm….that would have been pretty cool. Maybe next time…

0111: Instead of waking up my daughter to reset the modem for our Internet (which is located in our guest bedroom — she’s home for the weekend…wait, didn’t she just leave for school?), I’ve powered up my Verizon hot spot. We live in the boonies, and so I actually have a radio service provide my Internet connection, and it is pretty flaky sometimes. Good ol’ Verizon will just have to see us through.

0107: SpaceX and NASA have begun final launch configuration of the Falcon 9. 10% chance of weather canceling the launch.
0105: Ruht rho…the crappy Internet connection here at the house has gone down.
0101: Well, my cat Annie is awake with me. Happily, she was able to catch her tail. Twice. She clearly feels the drama from NASA TV.
0057: Ugh…that pizza I ate last night is sitting in my stomach like a churning vat of acid. Thank you, Dominoes.
0054: T-53 minutes and counting.
0053: Awake and questioning my sanity. Trying to go without coffee so hopefully in a couple of hours I can be back asleep.
