Major advance in satellite component cooling

AF, small business developing critical processors for satellites. ThermAvant Technologies LLC, out of Columbia, Missouri, has developed a chip carrier that provides an 84% reduction in temperature rise.

Under the “things I didn’t know until now” category:

Current satellite processors are running at 10 percent of their operating capability as a result of insufficient thermal management. Reducing the junction temperature allows for increased processing capability, up to 10 times more, and increases the expected lifetime of the on-board chips.

I knew hot spots can be a real problem in satellite design, but I didn’t realize it was that bad.
