ViaSat hires SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy for ViaSat-2 launch

ViaSat Selects SpaceX to Launch ViaSat-2 Satellite in 2016. That’s great news for ViaSat, a local company here in SoCal. I think that we’re seeing a tsunami crest on the horizon: as SpaceX continues to demonstrate its reliability, more and more commercial companies are going to contract with them because their costs are so low.

ViaSat-2 is expected to cover seven times the geographic area and offer twice the bandwidth economics advantage of ViaSat-1, which is already the highest capacity satellite in the world. Planned coverage includes North America, Central America, and the Caribbean basin. The satellite will also provide a bridge of coverage across the North Atlantic, connecting North America with high-capacity coverage in the UK and Europe for high-speed in-flight internet and other mobile services.

The Falcon Heavy’s first launch is slated for later this year, launching the Air Force’s STP-2. According to SpaceX’s launch manifest, other Falcon Heavy missions that are already booked include:

FALCON HEAVY DEMO CAPE CANAVERAL FALCON HEAVY
INMARSAT CAPE CANAVERAL FALCON HEAVY
INTELSAT CAPE CANAVERAL FALCON HEAVY
STP-2 US AIR FORCE CAPE CANAVERAL FALCON HEAVY
VIASAT CAPE CANAVERAL FALCON HEAVY

I believe these are listed in order of being planned, and not necessarily in launch order.
