Govt Space gets shout-outs during SOTU address

Human exploration to Mars and Climate Change.

“I want Americans to win the race for the kinds of discoveries that unleash new jobs – converting sunlight into liquid fuel; creating revolutionary prosthetics, so that a veteran who gave his arms for his country can play catch with his kid; pushing out into the Solar System not just to visit, but to stay. Last month, we launched a new spacecraft as part of a re-energized space program that will send American astronauts to Mars. In two months, to prepare us for those missions, Scott Kelly will begin a year-long stay in space. Good luck, Captain – and make sure to Instagram it.”

On the surface, a decent shout-out. However, he mentions Orion, a project that may very well have seen its first and only flight, and even if it does survive to operation, it won’t be able to compete with commercial launchers. No mention of Commercial space, with which NASA is leaning more and more upon to support its ISS missions. Also, SpaceX will have the capability to launch a Mars mission before NASA, so NASA may not even make it to Mars. That said, Kelly’s flight will provide a lot of good data about long duration flights, so that’s good.

“I’ve heard some folks try to dodge the evidence by saying they’re not scientists; that we don’t have enough information to act. Well, I’m not a scientist, either. But you know what – I know a lot of really good scientists at NASA, and NOAA, and at our major universities. The best scientists in the world are all telling us that our activities are changing the climate, and if we do not act forcefully, we’ll continue to see rising oceans, longer, hotter heat waves, dangerous droughts and floods, and massive disruptions that can trigger greater migration, conflict, and hunger around the globe. The Pentagon says that climate change poses immediate risks to our national security. We should act like it.”

Well, you know how I feel about this. When they can explain how our actions here are warming Mars as well, then maybe I’ll be a believer. Mr. Sun far overpowers any minuscule effect our actions have on the temperature of Earth. I can think of dozens of NASA projects that should be funded over global warming study. Yeah, I said it: Global Warming. ‘Cause that’s what they’re talking about, and the fact that they had to change the term to “Climate Change” tells you how strong their case for “Global Warming” is.

Anyways, I bet Senator Cruz will have a thing or two to say about NASA’s Climate Change missions.
