NASA SDO’s Fifth Anniversary video

The Solar Dynamics Observatory recently celebrated its 5th year in orbit, and NASA produced a pretty cool video of 5 years of Sun observations:

Seeing the Sun in a time-lapse video like this really makes some things stand out that I either didn’t know or didn’t get until looking at it.

  • Sunspots occur as within two bands — one North of the Sun’s equator, one South.
  • The Sun’s rotation is in the same direction as the direction of orbit of the planets, which makes sense.
  • The Earth’s rotation is in the opposite direction of the Sun’s, which makes less sense.

Definitely worth the two minutes and change to watch.
