MAVEN takes first sniffs of Mars’ upper atmosphere

NASA’s MAVEN Spacecraft Completes 1st Deep Dip Campaign. It dipped down to an altitude of 78 miles from 10 to 18 February to sample the upper atmosphere. One of MAVEN’s primary missions is to figure out the hows and whys of Mars’ atmosphere leeching out into space.

78 miles is deep enough to sample the atmosphere without subjecting the instruments onboard to too much friction and heat.
