A gift to you, dear reader

OK…when my ISP at home was down this morning, preventing me from getting a start on my news perusal, I should have known it was going to be one of those days. Here it is, after 3pm, and I am just now able to post. Major project done at work: check, but the past 36 hours have been pretty crazy. I apologize for not being able to post like I normally do.

So…I’ve been working on my own relational database of a certain sub-section of the US Government Space industry. It’s been a work/personal project of mine for, oh…the past month or so (ed.: maybe if you spent more time at work instead of doing pet projects, you wouldn’t have to cram everything in on a major project at the last minute…). It’s a work in progress, but it’s interesting enough now to share at a top-level.

Govt Space Industry

This is a depiction of the US Govt Space Industry, depicted as a Harel-Koren Fast Multiscale network. Actually, it’s a subset of the US Govt Space Industry (I won’t tell you of what, but reading this blog, you can probably take a guess). There are no labels (otherwise I’d have to kill you), but I still think it provides an interesting view of this sub-market.

Orange triangles are Companies.
Empty Diamonds are Awarded Contracts.
Red Diamonds are future Contracts
Purple Circles are Government Agencies.
Blue Squares are Branches within the Executive Branch.

The larger the shape, the more connections within the network.

You can see that most of the industry is pretty well interconnected, but there are a few branches that go out on their own. It will be interesting to see how this sub-market will change over time, and as I add more detail. I’m a darn good mathematician, but I’m a neophyte in social network analysis, so if you have any insight or recommendations, I’m all ears.

I won’t go into the specifics of the network in this blog post, but if you are interested in discussing this further one-on-one, I’d be happy to do so (if you are a US citizen). I don’t think there’s anything classified here. Reach out to me via LinkedIn (link to my profile is on the right side of this page).
