Curiouser…and curiouser

Russia announces plan to build new space station with NASA. My first thought when I read this was “Does NASA know?” — but Charlie Bolden was standing right there. The fact that there’s nothing on NASA’s web site about a new space station is…curious.

My second thought was “The Russians must have abandoned plans for their own space station, because thanks to their economy being crushed, they certainly can’t afford their own space station AND helping with a NASA project. Yet the article states:

Russia had said earlier this year it planned to create its own space station after 2024 using its modules from the ISS after it is mothballed.

Finally, there was this:

Russia’s deputy prime minister Dmitry Rogozin, who oversees the space sphere, appeared to downplay Komarov’s comments on Saturday.

“The Russian government will study the results of the talks between Roscosmos and NASA. The decisions will be taken later,” Rogozin wrote on Twitter.

As I said, “Curiouser…and curiouser.” Who knows what the heck is going on? My guess is that Roscosmos realizes it ain’t doing anything big in space ever again without international (and especially American) help. Moscow, though, is loathe to actually admit that, hence the pushback from Rogozin.
