NASA’s Mars Human Architecture Team says “no” to parachutes for landings

NASA favors propulsive Mars landings over supersonic parachutes. Building off the success of the Curiosity rover landing, and recognizing that a human landing on Mars would require over 10 ton of payload, the HAT says that they will only look at trades involving some mix of supersonic retro propulsion combined with deployable, inflatable, and/or rigid aeroshells for Mars landings.

Very interesting…and the proper direction, I believe. Of course, this means a change to the SLS/Orion Mars CONOPS, but that’s small potatoes.
