New Shepherd takes to the skies

Watch the Secret Test Flight of Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin Rocket. It went 307,000 feet (58 miles) before the capsule separated and landed safely via parachute. Interesting that they wouldn’t (couldn’t?) go 3 miles further to officially reach “outer space”.

The launch wasn’t a total success, though; a hydraulic system failure meant that the rocket’s propulsion module couldn’t actually be recovered. While Blue Origin works on fixing that little issue and doing more tests on this rocket, it’s also working on a much, much larger orbital vehicle that dwarfs the New Shepard in size.

Still, color me impressed. Blue Origin is much further along than I imagined. I’m curious about their launch costs — does SpaceX have a viable competitor on the horizon?
