Another Earth Observing constellation in the works

A New EO Constellation Is To Be Born Via UrtheCast. Surrey Satellite Technology and ElecnorDeimos Space are teaming together to build the “Constellation”, which will be the first fully-integrated, multispectral optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) constellation in orbit.

Their CONOPS is to fly a pair of satellites together (one SAR and one multispectral), combining the data into unique imaging products, as well as using the SAR data to help the trailing multispectral satellite avoid cloud cover.

I don’t know about their claim to provide “near real-time data” while flying their satellites in only two orbital planes, but the idea of collecting radar and multispectral data from the same spot on Earth at the same time would be something new…though whether there’s a big enough market for such a data product remains to be seen.

They plan to launch their first satellites in 2019 and be fully operational in 2020. It’ll be interesting to see how well their plan works out.
