Boeing gets an additional $6.6 mil to develop XS-1

Boeing Gets $6.6 Million More for XS-1 Military Space Plane. So far, about $16 mil have been spent in development.

DARPA wants the reusable XS-1 (short for Experimental Spaceplane-1) to make it easier and cheaper to get satellites to orbit. Eventually, the unmanned vehicle should be able to fly 10 times in a 10-day span and launch 3,000- to 5,000-lb. (1,361 to 2,268 kilograms) payloads for less than $5 million per mission, agency officials have said.

That’s an awful lot of capability for a tiny bit of money. I’m guessing by the amount granted that this is in Phase III of DARPA development.

I have a hard time believing that XS-1 will reach production capable of the above launch schedule, but we’ll see….
