200 Mbps from a CubeSat

Big Plans for Small Satellites: Testing Laser Communications, Formation Flying. This is an extraordinary accomplishment if they can get it to work. First, getting the power needed for laser communications requires a pretty robust panel system, probably better than any that has flown on a CubeSat before. Second, the precision needed for flying and orienting the CubeSat is certainly more stringent than any other CubeSat mission.

If they can actually get a CubeSat to pass data at 200 Mbps, it will be a major technical breakthrough. I’m betting that they’ll pull it off.

This is part of the Optical Communications and Sensor Demonstration (OCSD) program. The OCSD-2 demonstration will be tight formation flying with two CubeSats in 2016.
