Green Acres is the place to be…on Mars

You too can learn to farm on Mars: Case study on growing food in space.

Allen and Joyner have students identify potential challenges producing crops indefinitely and develop criteria for selecting crops. Students then use a scoring system to select three optimal foods.

In some 30 trial runs with students and teachers, “no people have ever gotten the same answer,” said Allen, a senior instructor of physics and astronomy and director of the WSU Planetarium.

This seems very interesting to me. We don’t know exactly what the soil on Mars is like and how it differs from locale to locale. And I like how they limit contestants to what would be brought with them on Mars.

Hmmmm…I wonder if I could do my own experiment like this in my garage? Hmmmmmmmmm….
