Rocket Labs picks range safety partner

Rocket Lab selects Alaska Aerospace for electron launch range safety. This is big news for Alaska Aerospace, whose motto must be “If you build it, they will come”. They own the Pacific Spaceport Complex Alaska (PSCA), but have understandably had problems drawing launch customers.

Fortunately, they happen to be right on the path for Rocket Lab’s sun-synchronous launches, so this is definitely a win-win for both companies. Maybe this will jumpstart business for Alaska Aerospace.

Personally, I think the best contribution Alaska can make to the space industry is by hosting ground stations for polar satellites. It’s hard for me to see them developing a viable launch business so far north.

But….I’ve always wanted to go to Alaska, and for any Alaska Aerospace readers out there, I’d be happy to be convinced otherwise. Send me on an all-expenses-paid trip to PSCA, and I’d be happy to blog all day long on what a great place it is.

Just sayin…
