Count me in…

From Spaceweather.com. They don’t provide links, so I’ll quote the article in its entirety: SOLAR ECLIPSE BALLOON NETWORK: Spaceweather.com and the students of Earth to Sky Calculus have developed a balloon payload that can photograph solar eclipses from the stratosphere. This sets the stage for a one-of-a-kind photography experiment: On August 21, 2017, the Moon …

Dang — I missed this!!

A Russian Rocket Body Lit Up West Coast Skies. Though I’m not sure I could have seen it, since I’m south of Los Angeles. This was a Russian SL-4 Soyuz from the ISS.

Two thumbs way up!!

Star Wars: The Force Awakens far exceeded my expectations. The story is solid, and the movie is great. I’d even go so far as say that it is the 2nd-best movie in the franchise. That’s all I have to say about it right now. Go see it! You will enjoy it. I’m looking forward to …

Happy Star Wars day

No, I haven’t seen it yet. We’ve got tickets for 10am Sunday and we’re taking the whole family. Actually, it’s going to be about 25 of us, since we’re actually going as part as a birthday party for one of my wife’s friends. DO NOT post any comments about the movie!!! I have avoided all …

Bagpipes….in…Space

Bagpipes in Space? Two of my favorite things! And the commercial that Youtube showed me before that video is worth linking…because it has Mr. T in it: You gotta like Mr. T, fool!! Which reminds me of the Terry Tate, Office Linebacker videos: Parenthetically, Terry Tate looks just like my brother from another mother, Kirk. …

NASA has Astronaut job vacancies

Be an Astronaut: NASA seeks explorers for future space missions. Awwwwww Yeahya!! They’ll start accepting applications on 14 Dec 2015, and will make announcements in mid-2017. The job applications will be posted here. Seems weird to apply as an Astronaut to NASA via the standard USAjobs.gov web site. I guess the keyword is “Astronaut”??? And …

Rest In Peace, Bob Farquhar

I was just talking with my dear friend Lyman, who passed on the news that Bob Farquhar had passed away. Here’s APL’s obituary for him which is very well done. I’ll quote the comment there by Edward Reynolds: I knew Bob well and worked with him on several projects. He truly revolutionized how the solar …

EPIC new NASA web site

NASA’s DSCOVR/EPIC page. It shows a daily view of the sun-side of Earth as imaged by DSCOVR’s Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC). Pretty cool! ====== Off to a late start blogging today — I had a dentist appointment first thing in the morning, then ran some errands. Thanks for your patience!

I finally saw “The Martian” this weekend

and LOVED it. The science is spot-on, and it’s funny to boot. Any movie that makes an Astrodynamics or a Mission ops gal a hero is A-OK in my book. I have one quibble, but I won’t talk about it now because I don’t want to spoil it for folks who haven’t seen the movie …

“The Martian” comes out today

I haven’t read the book, but I’m looking forward to the movie. I’ll probably see it sometime next week. And since it’s a slow news day (aside from ULA’s 100th launch), and with “The Martian” coming out today, I think this is appropriate: There’s a couple that they mention that I’ve not seen…I’ll have to …

Here’s a good site for a science fiction writer

Atomic Rockets: Topics. If you’re not an engineer or mathematician, but want to write hard sci-fi, then Atomic Rockets is a good reference for you. I’ve only thumbed through some of the topics and calculators, but it seems like a useful site.

Vote on what you think the spot on Ceres is

What’s the spot on World Ceres?. Interesting that JPL is calling Ceres a “world”, but I guess since it’s a dwarf planet, that’s ok. The options are Volcano Geyser Rock Ice Salt Deposit Other For the record, my vote was “Other”.

Remain calm…all is well

NASA: There is no asteroid threatening Earth. Numerous recent blogs and web postings are erroneously claiming that an asteroid will impact Earth, sometime between Sept. 15 and 28, 2015. On one of those dates, as rumors go, there will be an impact — “evidently” near Puerto Rico — causing wanton destruction to the Atlantic and …
