Nothing in the news…so my take on Space Elevators

And by “nothing in the news”, I mean nothing space-related that’s worth commenting upon from over two dozen of the news sources I review. Everyone seems to be holding their breath for tomorrow Cygnus ISS resupply launch. About the only thing that even remotely qualifies as news today is that LISA’s launch has been pushed …

Diamonds are a space elevator’s best friend?

Diamond Nanothreads Could Support Space Elevator. Just recently, a team from the Queensland University of Technology in Australia modeled the diamond nanothreads using large-scale molecular dynamics simulations and concluded that the material is far more versatile than previously thought and has great promise for aerospace properties. The simulation was published in early November. Hmmmmm…I think …

Pretty cool concept video about a Lunar space elevator

The cool thing is, we have the technology to build a Lunar space elevator now. Take a gander at the 7 minute video — there are some solid concepts there. The Liftport Group plans to begin construction in 2020. This seems wildly optimistic to me, but I hope I’m wrong.

A step forward (upward?) for Space Elevators?

Scientists create a string of diamond nanothreads. As most cool things are, this was discovered by accident. Obligatory cool pic:

International Space Elevator Consortium (ISEC) conference summary

From 22-24 Aug. I find space elevators to be an interesting, even neat, idea. But even putting the technological challenges aside, I don’t think we’ll ever see one. It would disrupt LEO and MEO satellite orbits as the satellites would have to maneuver around this big giant post in their way. Plus, providing security to …

Space Elevator Conference Wrapup

Summary from the Space Elevator blog. Interesting that the Japanese are looking for a sponsor to fund a climber Challenge.

Space Elevators movin’ on up

Er…not really. I’d say that when the optimists say the earliest we’ll see a space elevator is 2035, then don’t hold your breath. My prediction: Earth space elevators will be feasible in about 30 years. Whether they’ll actually ever be used is another question. I’ll say “yes”, but can think of plenty of reasons why …

It’s quiet…almost too quiet…so Space Elevators!

Strangely, there is nothing this morning worth linking or commenting…it seems that everything being reported as “news” today is stuff to which I linked last week. So on the plus side — readers here are getting breaking news first. I’m working on a couple of interviews, but the operative word is “working”, so…let’s see what’s …
