3D printing + CubeSats = Win

Design Competition Demonstrates Promising Future for Additive Manufacturing in Satellite Design. This was hosted by Stratasys, LTD and had over 200 entries. 3D printing can be advantageous because it can: – Reduce the amount of assembly labor, which saves cost and time. – Reduce the risk of assembly error, or a late part delaying production. …

3D printing — is there nothing it can’t do?

Well, it can print a Platinum Thruster Chamber that can survive test firings. “The firings included a single burn of 32 minutes, during which a maximum throat temperature of 1253°C was attained. “It demonstrates that performance comparable to a conventional thruster can be obtained through 3D printing.” I’ll say. Congrats to Airbus!

First 3D-printed rocket engine part using copper

NASA 3-D Prints First Full-Scale Copper Rocket Engine Part. Copper is particularly difficult to work with since it is so efficient with heat transfer. This is a major advance in 3D printing. The part will be test fired this summer, so I guess we’ll see how it actually performs then.

One man’s trash is another man’s 3D-printer stock

Recycling Space Waste: Tethers Unlimited Wins NASA Contract For Recycling Plastic Waste On ISS Into 3D Printer Filament. Tethers Unlimited is quickly becoming one of my favorite NewSpace companies. They move onto a Phase II SBIR to develop a recycling system for the International Space Station, turning plastic waste into 3D printer stock. AWESOME!!

3D printing…is there nothing it can’t do?

Well…plenty, yet. But that’s likely to change as existing patents expire. So much quotey goodness in this article… 3D printing will revolutionise war and foreign policy, say experts, not only by making possible incredible new designs but by turning the defence industry — and possibly the entire global economy — on its head. Scientists at …

ISS prints its first 3D part

Nothing will ever be the same again… Well, some things will be, but this is a first baby step toward a space community eventually becoming self-sufficient. Trust me, this is a BIG DEAL. Here’s the part they made: It’s a cover plate for the 3D printer itself.

Mmmmmm…Espresso in Space……

Microgravity is a real challenge to a proper expresso. The article goes into a lot of detail as to why, but the most interesting things from the article for me were: They’re delivering an espresso machine to the ISS next year. The ISS doesn’t have an espresso machine. They plan to 3D print the espresso …
